Dear friends, I am interested in learning the ways of living with the earth, and the arts of natural medicine, both shamanistic and holistic. At times I am able to connect strongly with the earth mother, but due to my surroundings and association I am often disconnected. I was raised in my youth with vedic traditions from india, namely Bhakti-yoga, or the science of love of the Creator,in which the Creator manifest as Supersoul is present in all things, but I am lacking direction, and am turned off by these 7 day courses of tracking and wilderness skills, I wish to learn the real ways and devote my heart to it. If anyone could help with information you shall have my most gratitude. sincerely, Jacob , Thunderbird Clan

We are doing the pro-bono translation of the word "GOD" for an independent short film called GOD EGO which will air at the Global Peace Film Festival. For part of the video the filmmaker would like to flash the word God in different languages. We would greatly appreciate it if a NATIVE speaker could send us an email with the word "GOD" translated into Hopi. Thank you!

Prosperity. In january, my path leads of from a college in Michigan, after a year and a half with rewarding steps, I have come to understand that this place has no more to offer, whereby I intend to travel across North-America before any further decision is made in regards to the coming. Hopi, and others of similar minds have brought me to understand that I have much to learn, whereby I am writing this with the intention of asking for shelter in return of work or any such kind, favor for favor. If such might be possible, then please let me know. Love, Arild Overvik

I am of the Assiniboine Nation from NE Mt. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and children of Lori Piestewa. I was drafted during the Viet Nam War and spent 18 months behind the Iron Curtain with the 4th Bat. 18th Infantry and know full well what it like to be in harms way. Lori's bravery will never be forgotten. I had the opportunity to spend some time in and around Moenkopi and 1st and 2nd Mesa during the summer of 1970 with a friend Nona Payestewa. I was impressed by the warmth and friendliness of the people. God Bless all of the Warriors who are defending our freedom.

First of all I want to say a belated thanks to all Veterans and to the family of Lori Piestewa. A Happy Birthday to all my Marine Corps brothers also. I have been reading this board and wanted to tell all my "brothers and sisters" all over the world that respond to this board. Being a former Marine myself and serving with The Walking Dead 1/9, I know what it's like to lose one our own. There's also been something that has been concerning me also. The Peabody Mining Company ,I found out, will be mining for uranium. Now to all those that know that the main reason for this is for the nuclear capabilities, i.e., nuclear weapons. They may claim that it will be used for nuclear energy but I thnk we all know why they want it so bad. This practice needs to be stopped not only for our Mother Earth itself but for us all. I am surprised that this practice has been going on all this time without anyone wondering why. We need to take a closer look and ask questions. If we don't do it right now......there may not be any one to ask later

Seeking an email friend
Hallo to Everyone! I am a 26-year old woman from Northern Germany. Since last year I am looking for a way to take part in the Healing-process for our Mother Earth and all living creatures. But I am somehow lost, because I am living in a culture where money and the outward appearance are ruling. In Germany the old ways and holy places have been forgotten or destroyed. Our children havent got many chances to learn how to respect and protect Mother Earth and The Great Spirit. The situation in this country and all over the world makes me so sad, but I dont want to sit back and give up - I want to do something about it! But how? What can I do to make people think and change their lifestyle? My family and many of my friends just think that I am crazy, they want me to live the way everyone does: Make a career, get wealthy, buy many luxury goods... But I feel that this way is wrong! I dont need a lot of money to be happy! And I dont want to exist in a way that harms our Mother Earth by exploiting her resources. If there is anybody out there who can give me advice or just wants to exchange ideas - write! Greetings to all my relatives, Annika

Return to the old ways! The world is preparing for great change and the old ways are all that will survive. Please take heed. The Earth is sick and will begin to heal, but as a living organism can only heal by ridding herself of the plague that man has given her. We are the stewards and we are not keeping up our bargin with the Great Spirit. The sky is falling and the water will bring balance. Please change your ways, even though it may be too late, our children may benefit.

I have the two stone tablets. One was a map of my ancestors that used the sky lizard with 10 legs to go from the south Pacific to get to Utah. They left part of the map in petroglyph in the south eastern part of Utah. The other stone tablet is a moon calendar with steps and moons with a part of the tablet purposely scratched out. Kokopelli was seen July 6,1054 on the 28th phase of the moon mother moon's sacred night. In Hawaii she gave birth to her youngest sister the healer Hiiakapoliopele. The bear symbol is the star constellation Cassiopea which was seen by you on August 6, 1181 - again the birth of a supernova a star but the colour was red and blue the symbol of the time of manhood ceremony. From January 8, 2016 to October 29, 2016 the 5th age will begin. Terror explosions will hit my homeland in Hawaii on the west side of Diamond Head after the US military suffers a terrible attack in the middle east and many young people are drafted into the armed forces. Mount Fuji in Japan will erupt soon. The U.S. economy will do well in 2004. Syria will invade Israel in 2009. Soon Italy will have a large eathquake as well as New Zealand. The new governor of California will turn the debt situation around.

Hi, I am intersted in know if there is a Hopi word for 'a sea faring way of life' or 'a way of life on the sea'.. The question springs to mind because of the movie trilogy which uses the word 'qatsi' "way of lfe" in the titles. The first of those films is a callled Koyaanisqatsi and the most recent Nagoyqatsi. I am interested in knowing the answer to my question as I would like to use the word (if there is one) as the name of my boat. Thanks, Mark Franklin, London.

Do the Hopi have any beliefs or theories about why the Aliens visit our planet. I have a theory that perhaps they were just like us once, and one day we will become as they are now. Perhaps they are not in the world. Their minds have great energy but it seems that their bodies do not. To join our DNA with theirs they would have both the energy of our bodies and their already powerful minds.

Greetings! to all people. In response to somana's entry, I agree with her concept of what saying and being Hopi means. Many indigenous people boast and glamourize of being Native American (not just Hopi) yet some cannot speak their native tongue, and have not clue as to where they really come from. My parents stressed to never forget where your from, I think connecting to your traditions is essential in walks of life, but one cannot relate to true heritage if they are ignorant of why and what being Native is.

Greetings, to all people of the human race. It would give me great happiness to know that all people of the the great Earth are at peace with themselves and their fellow man. I am a simple woman that grew up in a very modest home, all we had were eachother (nuclear family) as a means of survival. Frankly I did not know we were in poverty, because my parents always instilled in us that money was not extremely important. In our family, my parents said they were wealthy because they had many children. I talk of this because I came into some wealth for my education. Hopi awarded me a scholarship the year and I am very very greatful that I belong to a Tribe that stands behind their resources. With hard work and determination anyone can achieve their goal. Can anyone tell me what the word "Jacquai" means? This word was spoken to me during a spiritual connection with the Wingmakers, or "Central Race". I have never heard it before, any insight would be greatly appreciated. I was also instructed to tell you "Hopi" about the Wingmakers. They left an ancient instructional site in Chaco Valley, New Mexico. They are believed to have been in contact with the Anasazi people. Much information can be found on their Website. It speaks of unity, oneness, and wholeness with the source of all things. Check it out, Wingmakers.com, it's very spiritual and eye opening.

I have recently had some odd dreams, and have heard the prophetic Hopi elder that spoke to something deep within myself. I'm just looking to ask some questions to someone with a basic knowledge of native spirituality and how I fit in. I'm of mostly Irish descent, so I'd like to get some answers from someone who really knows. Thanks, and love and luck to all who are struggling right now.

Loloma, hope this message finds all in great spirits and good health. My mom told me yesterday to forget all the anger that I had towards people and situations. Also to let go of any bitterness that I had for anyone. I am not a bitter, or hateful person, but sometimes situations stress me out. Just want all to find it in yourself to forgive those who have betrayed you and treat everyone like you want to be treated. Don't worry be Hopi (cliche):)

My name is Philip Melnick, and I am a man of the Jewish faith from the tribe of Judah. I was a prominent labor leader for almost thirty years, but in 1998 had a powerful spiritual experience that changed my life. I resigned from my position as a Union Representative for the California Nurses Association, and began to devote my life to the research and study of ancient Southwestern and Mesoamerican archeology. I have just been accepted as a graduate student at Prescott College, and am moving to Arizona in August. I am searching for links between the Hopis and the ancient civilizations of Mexico and Central America. I want to explore the ruins of Oraibi, and learn why they have not been reconstructed. I will provide my services as a negotiator, organizer, and representative in return for any assistance I receive. I have excellent credentials, including a letter of recommendation from the former Chief of the Sliammon Nation here in Canada. I will be deeply grateful for any help that I can get.

Hi, I'm a writer and graphic artist from Austria. I have been involved in a novel "starring" a Hopi for some years now, and for further development of the storyline I'm looking for somebody who would be willing to tell me about Hopi life in the 1920s to 40s, in World War Two, and the position that Hopi now take to the War in Iraq. I live in northern Arizona and have been to the Mesas a number of times to prayfully support the katsina dancers. I would like to hear what Hopis think about the study I have been doing. Basically, this study deals with the constellation Orion as having the same pattern as the Hopi villages. My web site is http://azorion.tripod.com I do not wish to speak for the Hopi people rather wish to speak TO the Hopi in order to establish a dialogue as a bridge between cultures. My goal is to see if my findings are verified in Hopi world view. I would appreciate response to my ideas. kwakwhay.

Hello, I am seeking information regarding Hopi Overlay Jewelry. First, two years ago I bought an overlay silver coyote pendant in a small art gallery behind the cultural center in Second Mesa. The hallmark on it, looks like the claw of a bird of prey. Does anyone know who the artist who created it might be? Second, I am trying to track down (if such a thing exists) an overlay link (or hinged like a watchband?) bracelet. I really like Terry Wadsworth's work and like the simple, clean images that he uses. Does anyone know how I might get a hold of Terry, or find such a bracelet? Thank you very much for your help. Cheryl

Read an interesting letter on this webpage: "At college we were taught that Hopi believe in 5 Worlds. Our instructor said there are '2' different versions to this 5 Worlds belief amoung Hopi and that one version is that the 5 Worlds actually mean 5 'AGES' on this earth and that the other version is a belief in 5 actaul different spirit worlds. Is this information correct. I relate to the first offered version of 5 ages. If anyone could offer an answer to this I'd much appreciate it! Also is there a regular Hopi newsletter on this? Thanks!

I have read the following information. Can someone tell me if these two statements are actually true? If true, I completely missed the story about the Eagle feathers. Can someone tell me the significance of this to the Hopis? Thank you - 1) The Hopi prophecy has said that the USA's role in the world is to become the planetary "Peace-Keeper" 2) Another omen presents itself when we look back to August 2001 when the US administration returned the sacred Eagle feathers to the Hopi, instead of keeping them as an acknowledgement of their peacekeeping role.

Hello. I am writing to ask the forgiveness of the Hopi. I realized that I have inadvertantly over-reached, perhaps, regarding an inquirey I made in March about a sacred burial ceremony. I was in great distress and sorrow, and selfish in my need for solace. I sincerely and deeply apologize, for I now understand that my question may have intimated a lack of respect for what is sacred. That prospect breaks my heart, for that was in no way my intent. Again, I ask you forgiveness.

My Dad is Navijo, my Mom is Apatche,Tewa, And Hopi. i guess i really enjoy being all those kind of caltures. because, i get to know all kind of things about them that i don't really know about. But i's hard trying to keep up with all of it. but i like it. I am now at Sherman Indian High School. Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am a student at a university and I am writing a paper on my family history in education. My grandfather was partial Cherokee Indian but unfortunately he is no longer with us to supply me with the information I need. I would like to know how education has changed among native americans! What was it like? Were there schools? Any information regarding the history of native american education will be greatly appreciated!! Please email me at candi_r7 (at) hotmail.com...Thank you very much!

Hello brothers and sisters, my name is Oso I live in Tucson, Arizona. I am seeking a spiritual group in the Tucson area that sweats and supports each other in following the spiritual practices of native peoples. I am weary of organized religion and the hipocracy it represents. Support of other like minded men and women would really be great. Anyone who is of like mind and spirit will be welcomed by me. May there be a road! Oso

To All Who Read This- Hopi is a great place with amazing people, no wonder why so many people are drawn to us. Our culture on a daily basis is interesting to people because we are not like any other native people anywhere, not like anyone anywhere for that matter. Because of this you have to expect people will want to ask all kinds of questions. I know that the questions about "spiritual leaders", "mystic native guides", dreams of phantom elders and Katsinas, and the continual asking if we live in teepees or other types of nomadic shelters, the land despute and hopi philosphy questions are somewhat of an annoyance. These are asked out of ignorance, and although we find them insulting, they are how typical americans view Hopi. Can you blame them? With all the books out there about Hopi, you are bound to get half truths and anglo fantasies mixed in with the text for selling appeal. There are also those who want to live like us after they read a book on Hopi, be a Hopi live in the village, live in a cultura l, spiritual and meaningful life. We as Hopis have to remember that especially in the times that we live in, there are a lot of people who are wanting to belong. Even if their requests seem intrusive, these people are looking for something and someone to belong to. I am not saying you have to respond to them, but for goodness-sake, handle it a little bit better. They read a book and even though it was probibly written by anglo men, and they develop a love affair with Hopi. We can't change the information that is out there so expect this type of question asking to be around forever. The best thing to do, in true Hopi style, is to try to be patient with them and not be so mean. They overall mean well, but in a nice way tell them that their questions are inappropriate. As Hopis we are taught this patience and kindness mannerism from an early age, and you should all know that our songs, the dances, the whole reason we pray and do the things we do are to ask for good things for every one and everything, we don't exclude anyone from our prayers. Besides with the way that our world is going we all have to remember to be a little kinder to one another. Usquali

Hello anyone out there. I have watched the movie "Koyaanisqatsi" many many many times. And I have always been intrigued by the word. There is a definition for the word on the VHS box, and I assume it is accurate (life out of balance, crazy life, etc.). But I have always wondered about the larger context or metaphorical connotation of the word, or even if that is the correct meaning. If anyone with accurate knowledge could email me that would be great. I love sharing ideas and I think that it's about time that western culture becomes open-minded and starts learning some things from the many many other cultures and other valid ways of living that exist on this wonderful planet. Thanks, Dan V.

I want to send my condolences to the piestewa family. I am deeply saddened by the lost of your mother, sister, niece, and granddaughter. I cannot express the thanks and gratitude I have for Lori. With my boyfriend being in the service I know the hardship of seeing him off waiting for his return. But, I am also thankful and proud of him and all the other servicemen and women for the job that they do. Lori is a true hero. In seeing her video of her getting ready to leave I see a true loving person, I could only wish to have known her. May god hold you within his arms and guide you along on your journey.

Hello. I have today received an email message attributed to "The Elders, Hopi Nation, Oraibi, Arizona." The words of the mesage are good words. But those words mean something very different if they are indeed from the Hopi Elders than if they only pretend to be from the Elders. Can someone help me understand if this is an authentic message from the Hopi or is it simply from someone pretending to be Hopi to get attention for their own words? I am not Hopi. I ask out of respect for your tradition. I do not want to pass counterfeit on to my friends.

I used to live in Tuba City. My mother, Tillie White, was a nurse in Keams Canyon and Tuba City Arizona ('88/'90). We moved away once but we loved the area, friends, people, culture we ended up moving back. My sister Tanya's children are Hopi/Chippewa, thier father is Arles Aragon from Hotevilla and grandma is Bonita Sekinima from Tuba City. I never met any members of the Piestewa family while I lived there but me and my family attended church at St. Judes Catholic Church. I recognized the church in the news that has been shown on the news lately. Serrita Dale, a spokesperson for the Piestewa family, is the Godmother of my niece who was baptized at St. Judes in Tuba City. There is a good chance that my family attended services along side the Piestewa family at St. Judes during the time we lived there. If so Lori must have been around the age of 8-10 back then. I'm so sorry for the loss of Lori Piestewa in Iraq. I have close ties to the Hopi through family and friends as I've spent 5 yrs. of my life there. I'll never, ever, forget her even though I never met her face to face. I put up a sign in the front yard when she was "M.I.A." which I took down Saturday(4/5/03). I will put up another sign soon thanking Lori for her service to our country.

We are terribly saddened by the news of the passing of Lori Piestewa. We have a love for the Hopi people which is very difficult to understand until you meet and know them. What makes this news even more painful is knowing the Hopi's profound belief in Peace. We have visited Hopi three times now, as we sponsor several Hopi children through a group called Futures for Children. I would ask each of you who read this board and have not been to Hopi, to make an effort to visit these people. I do not believe you can come away from this visit without a life changing experience. To me, this would be one of the greatest ways to honor a fallen warrior. To learn about her people, her land, and her culture. You will come away much better for the experience.

Back in the mid 60's my dad worked on road construction. We traveled to the Third Mesa one weekend. We picked up Harlan, a young Hopi who was hitching a ride home from a school in Phx. His family; especially his grandmother, was overjoyed when we pulled up to their home in Old Oraibi and he climbed out of our car. It was a WELCOME HOME and we were honored guests. We were invited to dinner. To attend the Snake Dance. We ate Piki Bread. Many years passed, I attended a Powwow and witnessed the Grand Entry. This took my breath away. 33 years after Vietnam I witnessed Native Americans Honoring and saying, "WELCOME HOME" to Vietnam Veterans and all other Vets. I have heard in my spirit, "I am calling the Native American to a place of Honor." "I will heal the wounded heart on Wounded Knee." Keeping this tragic news in mind. Keeping in mind the Hopi Prophecies. I am listening. I want to hear the message in all of this. This Vietnam Veteran stands at attention to Honor LORI PI ETEWA. I SALUTE YOU. You are my sister. I just wanted to say that I am saddened by the news of the death of Lori Piestewa. I often thought of her, as one of my students, James Kiehl of Comfort, Texas, was part of the 507th Maintenance Division that was ambushed. He was my favorite student and I mourn him, as I know the Hopi nation mourns the loss of Lori. I have scanned the newspapers, everything from the Arizona Republic to the Arab News looking for news of James and his comrades. From the pictures of Lori I can tell that she was a fine person. Having attended Comanche powwows here in Texas, I honor the Native Americans, for they have fought for this country with many of their best and bravest. I can never forget the bloodstained American flag that began the procession at the powwow. I pray for both Lori and James, and all the other brave soldiers. Jennifer Woolvin (Muscogee)

Dear Sir/Madam: I wish to extend my condolences to the parents, children, friends and members of the Hopi Tribe at large in the death of my fellow American, Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa. It wounds my heart to think of this young Warrior and mother has been taken from us. Words fail me at this time. Like so many other young Warriors who have fallen in battle; she had yet to realize all of her ambitions and dreams.

My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Lori Piestewa. I feel a connection with Lori and her people, because 2 years ago I visited the Hopi people of Tuba City and also visited the 1st and 2nd mesas in Arizona. It was the single, most moving experience of my life. Nowhere I have been even comes close! Consequently, and because of my deep admiration for a truly honorable, remarkable people, I would be priviledged to carry their quest for peace from this world to the next.

Being part Iroquois I now have this to say on the lost of Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa to her people, these words are part of of our nation and I hope refect the words and parys of my people. To the Family and Hopi people I say this on the lost of Pfc. Lori Ann Pietewa. 'Persevere onward to the place where the Creator dwells in peace. Let not the things of the earth hinder you. Let nothing that transpired while yet you lived hinder you. In hunting you once took delight; in the game of Lacrosse you once took delight and in the feasts and pleasant occasions your mind was amused, but now do not allow thoughts of these things to give you trouble. Let not your relatives hinder you and also let not your friends and associates trouble your mind. Regard none of these things." "Now then, in turn, you here present who were related to thiese mans and womans you who were there friends and associates, behold the path that is yours also! Soon we ourselves will be left in that place. For this reason hold yourselves in restraint as you go from place to place. In your actions and in your conversation do no idle thing. Speak not idle talk neither gossip. Be careful of this and speak not and do not give way to evil behavior. One year is the time that you must abstain from unseemly levity but if you can not do this for ceremony, ten days is the time to regard these things for respect." "Now we become reconciled as you start away. You were once a woman in the flower of life and the bloom is now withered away. You once held a sacred position as a mother of the nation. Looking after your family was a sacred duty and you were faithful." Your call to take arms and be protector of your family and tribe and to help the men has placed you where no woman should have been. May the young warriors take your courage as an inspiration and use it to lead them. The United People shall never forget the sacerfice that you have given.

my name is eric...i live in phoenix although originally from boston...and my business dealings have often brought me in contact hopi and navajo people. i find your openness, humor and love of living quite moving and it has touched me quite deeply that lori has been lost. i did not know her...but my love of the people she was one with makes me sadder than i can express. my love of her people along with the love of my country, which pales in comparison to her devotion and love for our country, pains my heart all the more. you have lost a dear beloved sister...the rest of america has lost a compasionate and wise soul of immesureable worth for being apart of a people so unfairly treated yet overcoming any sense of resentment only to embrace and therefore honor the best of america and forgiving the worst. i fear i shall never staucnch the tears i now shed for her...may the unknowable touch her spirit with the most wonderous of knowledge on her journeys.

Dear Hopi People, The Massachusetts People will honor the memory of Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa on Sunday, April 6, 2003 during a day of remembrance at the site of the first massacre of Native People in Colonial America. This day marks the 380th Anniversary of the "Killings at Wessagussett" the day when several Massachusetts Native People were massacred by Captain Miles Standish and his men of Plimoth Colony. This was the first strike by English Colonists on Native People and it is a story not widely known in the Native community or the general population. On May 6, 1999, the Town of Weymouth (formerly Wessagussett) honored those who were killed by purchasing the only open space remaining in the vicinity of the killings. On October 21, 2001, local Native People, neighbors, and Town leaders came together to dedicate the Wessagussett Memorial Garden with prayers for peace and reconcilation. Tomorrow we will honor Lori Ann Piestewa with smudging and prayer. We send our love to her family and friends and give our thanks for her courage and loyalty.

My prayers and that of my family and our community is with Priscilla and Terry Piestewa, parents of LORI PIESTEWA. She was and still is a Warrior for her people. She fought in Iraq, a world away, but it was for a greater goal. A goal to give freedom to a people who is presently ruled and judged by an evil man. She did her part here on Earth and payed the ultimate price now she watches over us all. May the Great Spirit watch over her and may you who have known LORI PIESTEWA be proud. Msit-No'kmaq . . .
